The first known Europeans to visit Cuba were Columbus and his fellow expedition members on October, 12, 1492. From early XVI century until 1898 Cuba was a colony of Spain, and Cuban economy was based upon plantation agriculture. In 1959 Cuba became a socialistic state, the fist one in the Western Hemisphere and the only one remaining as of today. It's first leader, Fidel Castro Ruz, was the Head of State from 1959 until 2008. The past and present activity of the Communistic government of Cuba causes a lot of controversy.
