The territory of Peru has been populated for more than 11000 years. Inca Empire, one of the most powerful civilizations of America before the end of the XV century, had very highly developed agriculture. In the second quarter of the XVI century Peru became a Spanish colony. Increasing exploitation of the colony by the Spanish crown in late XVIII century resulted in rebellion led by Tupac Amaru II (Rap singer Tupac Shakur aka 2Pac was named after him). Independence from Spain gained in 1824. Currently the main part of revenue comes from export of metals and agricultural products. The most notable natural zone is the Andes Mountains.
